Lowes

Lowe's is the Premier Supplier of Building Products to Consumers and Contractors Alike

Lowe’s North Wilkesboro Hardware opened in North Carolina in 1921. In the past the store not only focused on hardware and building materials but also dry goods, horse tack, snuff, produce and groceries. After the Second World War Jim Lowe took on Carl Buchanan, who served with him in the war, as a partner in 1943. Then in 1949 they bought a second store and opened in Sparta North Carolina.

Later Jim and Carl differed on expanding the company into other markets and they split in 1952 with Carl taking control of the hardware and building supply business. Finally Buchanan became the sole owner of Lowe’s but Carl Lowe then started a grocery chain in 1954 called Lowes Foods. In the coming years Lowe’s quickly expanded into other cities in North Carolina but in 1960 Carl died of a heart attack at the age of 44.

His five man executive team took Lowe’s public in 1961 and by 1962 they operated 21 stores and had annual sales revenues of $32 million. In the 80s a new store, called Home Depot, opened in the building supply market along with poor market conditions Lowe’s suffered until it adopted the model of big box warehouse store. Since then Lowe’s has continued to grow nationally and purchased Eagle Hardware & Garden in 1999 and now is the second largest home improvement chain in North America.
